Feature: Hublot Dazzles W&W With A Purple Sapphire Tourbillon

Few of the luxury watches on display at this year’s Watches and Wonders will have made such an impression as this eye-watering number from—who else?—Hublot.

The brand proudly states that innovation “has been driving it for over 40 years” and this constant quest to pioneer new, unorthodox materials, aesthetics and technology has won them both admirers and naysayers who find it difficult to embrace what they stand for (and the fact that it’s a brand beloved by certain football players).

Hublot haters will definitely be non-plussed by the Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic Purple Sapphire, an exclusive version of the translucent material and a colour that the brand says is completely new in the field of watchmaking—although they probably said the same when they brought out a previous version in bright tangerine-orange.

The dial is magnificently skeletonised, revealing an automatic movement with micro-rotor and the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, however the large purple Arabic numerals at 2, 4, 8 and 10 o’clock, as well as purple hour and minute hands, make it surprisingly legible. This is helped by the 44mm case, the back of which is also sapphire, allowing you to see the movement from both sides.

The power reserve of the HUB6035 calibre is 72 hours and this remarkable piece—something of a horological jellyfish that looks like it belongs in an exotic aquarium—comes on a matching, lined translucent purple rubber strap for extra supple comfort.

Expect one or two flashy footballers to be wearing it at this year’s World Cup Finals, always a great opportunity for spotting the latest luxury watches.
