TAG Heuer Monaco Watches

Made famous by Steve McQueen in the 1971 film Le Mans, the Monaco is one of TAG Heuer's most iconic designs, hand-picked by McQueen himself for use on set. Designed by Jack Heuer and released in 1969, the Monaco's square case makes it arguably the watch industry’s most distinctive chronograph. Read more

Case Size
The size of a watch is very important for style and comfort. If you prefer an oversized watch like a Panerai Luminor, you’ll probably want Large. If you’re looking for something more discreet like a Rolex Lady Datejust, you’ll want Small. For everything in between, Medium.

Introduced in 1969, the TAG Heuer Monaco is a legendary watch that has held the fascination of watch aficionados worldwide for decades. Its iconic design and rich heritage make this a standout model in TAG Heuer's catalogue.

What originally set the Monaco apart is its groundbreaking square-shaped case. It was the very first square-cased water-resistant watch in the world and was powered by the iconic Calibre 11—the first-ever chronograph movement with a micro-rotor. It was also one of the earliest self-winding chronographs, emerging around the same time as Zenith’s legendary El Primero. Thanks to its pioneering design, the Monaco was quickly positioned as a symbol of style and innovation.

But the TAG Heuer Monaco's significance extends beyond aesthetics. Like many TAG Heuer models, it has deep roots in the motorsport industry, particularly the prestigious Formula One race in Monaco—hence its name. However, its icon status was really cemented after it was spotted on the wrist of late Hollywood actor and the “King of Cool”, Steve McQueen, in the 1971 film Le Mans.

Today, the TAG Heuer Monaco continues to captivate watch enthusiasts with its timeless design and racing heritage.

Its distinctive square-shaped case sets it apart from traditional round watches, giving it a timeless sixties-cool aesthetic that continues to appeal to a multitude of watch lovers. Its chronograph function allows for precise measurement of elapsed time, making it a practical choice for those in need of accurate timekeeping, especially those on the racetrack.

On the technical front, the Monaco has seen a few updates to bring it into line with modern standards. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass has replaced the acrylic lens of the original, and the Calibre 11, with its micro-rotor, has now largely been replaced with a movement featuring a full-sized rotor.

Whereas the original Monaco came in steel, the modern collection offers a titanium version, and there are many dial variations and colours, from vivid purple to racing stripes. There is even a simple time-and-date model without the chronograph function.

In 2009, TAG unveiled the innovative Monaco V4. A concept watch that showed why technical innovation is still one of the key factors driving the brand. Dispensing with a conventional automatic movement, the V4 uses a belt-driven transmission, with spring barrels charged by a linear mass—a rectangular slab of tungsten sliding side-to-side—rather than the typical swinging rotor.

With its distinctive features, advanced technology, and model variations, the TAG Heuer Monaco appeals to both racing enthusiasts and admirers of fine craftsmanship.

Further enhancing its appeal, the TAG Heuer Monaco has been spotted on the wrists of various celebrities. Aside from Steve McQueen, fellow actor Jacob Elordi was photographed wearing an all-black limited-edition Monaco, adding a touch of the X factor to its reputation. As you can see, choosing a TAG Heuer Monaco places you in good company indeed.

The Monaco’s timeless appeal, superior craftsmanship, value, and association with celebrities make it a standout among luxury timepieces.
